Synopsis

COACHING DVD TO HELP SCHOOLS CREATE “THE COLLEGIATE FEEL”

In today’s schools, pupils are increasingly encouraged to reflect on their own learning. Graham Maslen, Head Teacher of North Halifax Grammar School, is spearheading a collaborative of six Calderdale schools in co – producing with Ambit a DVD - based training package on pupil coaching.

This DVD-based school development and training course describes the many benefits of pupil peer coaching... an initiative that enhances personalised learning and creates an ethos where it is cool to talk about learning.

The course provides schools with guidance on the implementation, administration and monitoring of an effective pupil peer coaching scheme in your school.

Includes numerous suggestions and ideas for training pupil coaches to ensure that everyone gets the most out of the initiative.

Says Graham Maslen, “I’m a firm believer that open, continuing and unselfconscious discussion about learning between teachers and pupils, teachers and teachers and pupils and pupils has huge benefits for the quality of pupils’ learning, their actual attainments and the ethos of the school as a whole. This is the basis of “collegiality” and I’m convinced it’s the way schools need to go and will go to engage young people in the future and achieve higher and higher standards.”

The project is managed by Educational Consultant David Farrant, formerly of Calderdale Council’s Education Department. “Having previously worked with Ambit on our highly successful staff coaching DVD Learning from Each Other, we felt that they were the ideal company to make this new programme, bringing with them all the right experience, expertise and sensitivities.”

“Watching them work with younger students and really make a difference….. it’s quite humbling really.”
Selina Brown, Lead Teacher
