Synopsis

This book provides the basic fundamental principles required for the engineering student and the practicing engineer on which to make informed decisions on how to manufacture metal and plastic engineering components out of available raw materials. It is especially relevant to the local manufacturing scene. Most of its contents are collected from the author’s personal experience in research and industrial practice, both in the civilian and the military sectors. 

About The Author:

Professor Dr MAJ (NS) Seah Kar Heng obtained his B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering with First Class Honours in 1975 from the University of Southampton, U.K. on the Colombo Plan Scholarship as well as the President's Scholarship. After completing his full-time national service, he worked as a Mechanical Engineer in the Public Works Department (PWD), which has become today’s CPG Corporation. Subsequently, he obtained his Master's and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering in 1980 and 1982 respectively, both from Queen’s University, Canada.

Prof Seah has been lecturing in NUS since 1983. Through the years, he has given lectures and tutorials in Physics, Workshop Technology, Statics, Dynamics, Mechanics of Machines, Mechanical Engineering Design, Manufacturing Processes, Automotive Engineering, Race Car Engineering, Engineering Statistics and Computer-aided Design (CAD). He has been supervising the NUS Formula SAE race car project since its inception in 2001. In the past, he was an Ex-co member of the Institution of Engineers, Singapore, as well as the Chairman of the Society for Manufacturing Engineers, Singapore Chapter. One year, he was one of only eight engineers worldwide to receive the Outstanding Engineer Award from the US HQ of the Society for Manufacturing Engineers. For many years now, he has been a member of the Engineering Faculty Teaching Evaluation Committee, as well as a Fellow of the NUS Teaching Academy. He is also a facilitator in the Engineering Design-centric Program, as well as a mentor in the Global Engineering Program. Outside NUS, he has conducted many professional short courses for practicing engineers on Materials Selection and Manufacturing Technology, and has been consultant for military and civilian projects. He is currently a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and has previously been on the Singapore Mass Rapid Transport (SMRT).
